Dive In! Totally Teen Festival 2012

Hi all the time of year for South Dublin Libraries Dive In! Totally Teen Festival has come around again.  Check out the programme below for our fantastic events.

Sarah Rees Brennan, Author

 Sarah Rees Brennan was born and raised in Ireland by the sea, where her teachers valiantly tried to make her fluent in Irish but she chose to read books under her desk in class instead. She is the author of Team Humanand the Demon’s Lexicon trilogy. Her new book is Unspoken, a romantic Gothic mystery about a girl named Kami Glass, who discovers her imaginary friend is a real boy, Jared Lynburn. He is also one of the mysterious Lynburn family who have returned to the sinister manor on the hill that looms over her town, and who may or may not be involved in dark deeds in the woods. Kami is determined to discover all the secrets that have been kept from her by the town, Jared, and her own family.

Graphic Art Workshop with Maeve Clancy

 Learn how to create comics from concept to the printed page in this one day intensive workshop with comic artist and writer Maeve Clancy. In the first half of the day, participants will write a simple story, design characters, illustrate backgrounds and format the work into a comic. From these paper workings, the afternoon will involve scanning, digital colouring and the addition of text and speech bubbles at the Mac Lab in Rua Red. Each participant leaves with a printout of their comic and a digital version which they can print, email or post on their Facebook and Bebo pages.

Maeve Clancy is a Dublin-based artist and writer and is a teacher of Digital Animation. She produces comics, illustration and animation. Her weekly webcomic, ‘Flatmates’, was published in book form by The Verbal Arts Centre, Derry in June 2010 as part of its ‘Sequences’ series. She is currently working on Inheritance, a graphic novel set in Dublin and Berlin. She was involved in the creative production of two music videos, ‘Lille’ and ‘I Don’t Know’, by singer-songwriter Lisa Hannigan.

 Have you ever written a song? Would you like to try? Here’s your chance. Whether you’ve written lyrics before or are just starting out, join Elton and Carol in this songwriting workshop. Book early as places are limited.

 Dublin born singer-songwriter Carol Keogh was the winner of Unsigned and Online competition 2012. She has been nominated in the Best Female Singer and Best Irish Band category of the Meteor Awards. Carol is currently recording her debut solo album Mongrel City.

 Elton Mullally is a musician and vocalist. He also works in television, producing, directing and presenting. He has produced and co-hosted the alternative music show ‘Under Ether’.

Creative Writing with Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick

 Fancy letting your creative side out? If you’ve ever thought about writing your own novel, poem, play or short story then join popular author Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick in this Creative Writing workshop. Aspiring writers can develop writing skills, build confidence and have lots of fun.

 Marie-Louise is the award-winning author and illustrator of books for children and teens. She frequently gives talks and workshops throughout Ireland. Originally known for her picture books, her first novel for teens, Timecatcher, was published in 2010 and was followed this year by Dark Warning. When she is not busy writing and illustrating books, Marie-Louise loves travelling, photography, history … and chocolate.

 Enroll now for a spoof lecture on the real science behind the undead. Certified by the Zombie Institute for Theoretical Studies (ZITS) Theoretical Zombiologist, Doctor Austin teaches how a zombie outbreak might occur, its effect on humans and, importantly, how to stop it.


Comic Production Workshop with Alan Nolan

 Alan Nolan will facilitate this Comic Production Workshop. Alan Nolan is a comics writer, graphic designer, artist and co-creator of the horror series Sancho. Alan is also the creator of The Big Break Detectives Casebook, a graphic novel for younger readers, and the Murder Can Be Fatal mysteries for young adults. Born in Dublin, he studied at the National College of Art and Design.


Greenhills CollegeCreative Writing Awards Project

Where: County Library Tallaght

 The Creative Writing Awards project was started four years ago in Greenhills College. The aim of the project is to stimulate an interest in writing amongst the students and to develop the students’ confidence and skills in creative writing. A compilation of the students’ writings over the last four years has now been produced and the four volumes will be presented to the library at this event, where a selection of students will read their work.
