Book-O-Vision

Book-O-Vision: Avengers Assemble!

So Joss Whedon’s Avengers Assemble (why couldn’t it just stay The Avengers like in the USA?) is released in Ireland on 27th April.  This might be a good time to look at other movies based on comic books and graphic novels.

These can be really divided into the good and the truly awful.

On the good side we have the Christopher Nolan Batman movies (even if Batman has started to sound a little like a broken lawn mower).  Batman Begins (2005) introduced a grittier and more realistic world and who can forget Heath Ledger’s joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight. His final instalment, The Dark Knight Rises is one of the most anticipated movies of this summer.  Sticking with Batman Tim Burton had great success with Batman (1989) and Batman Returns (1992).  This gave us a much more stylised and comic book Batman.

On the positive side we also have the first two Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies (Spider-Man 2002 and Spider-Man 2 2004), the first two X-Men movies (X-Men 2000, X2 2003 and the excellent X-Men:First Class 2011), Iron Man 1(2008) & 2 (2010), Thor (2011) and Captain America (2011). Kick-Ass (2010) also proved to be a huge hit for Matthew Vaughn.

There are also the comic book movies you wouldn’t expect. A History of Violence (2005) was based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke.  Road to Perdition (2002) was based on a graphic novel by Max Allan Collins and Richard Piers Rayner.

So, those are the good, what about the terrible?  YAPS will admit to having a soft spot for bad comic book movies.  Here are a few of them.

O.K so we have to include Batman & Robin (1997) as a total turkey.  We also need to include Spider-Man 3 (shame on you Sam Raimi). X-Men:The Last Stand ended the x franchise for a while. Daredevil (2003) also sank without a trace and DC’s Green Lantern (2011) gave us the CGI costume of horror. Hulk (2003) directed by Ang Lee tried to give us a more sensitive Hulk but proved too slow and The Incredible Hulk (2008) proved finally that green was not a good colour for super heroes.

What will Avengers Assemble give us?  That waits to be seen.  YAPS can’t wait to see it.  Why not leave us a review if you do?
